The Trappist Route

Are you ready to discover the 3 ancestral jewels of Belgian beer? The Trappist route will take you to the 3 Walloon Trappist abbeys, Rochefort, Orval and Chimay! A tour with stages of between 60 and 80 kms per day, ideal for epicureans, experienced bikers or simple amateurs.

 

The trip in a few words

E-Bike Trip offers an authentic tour that will take you through the three Walloon abbeys via country roads. A 6 day tour where borders will be crossed and unexpected encounters will often be made…

Level:

Intermediate. Trip of about 350 kms. If you are a regular cyclist, on long distances, this is your passion.

60 to 80 kms/day where the difference in altitude, if any, will not scare you. The route is mainly on cycle paths, tarmac farm tracks or small roads with little traffic. The terrain is fairly hilly.

The program

Day 1

Arrival in the late afternoon in Namur

Installation in your hotel and free visit of this magnificent city. We strongly recommend: La Citadelle de Namur which has always occupied a strategic position in the heart of Europe. A medieval vestige of inestimable value. Today, the citadel offers a testimony of 2000 years of history.

Continue through the city center to discover the most beautiful places in Old Namur: the Belfry, the Theatre, the Walloon Parliament, La Place de l’Ange or the Bishop’s Palace, La Cathedrale Saint-Aubain, the Provincial Palace, the Church of Saint-Loup. Don’t forget La Place du Marché aux légumes, home to the oldest café in Namur: the Ratin-Tôt. Finally, discover the city as you have never seen it before thanks to the city’s cable car!

Day 2

You will leave Namur along the banks of La Meuse to reach Chimay along country lanes…

Day 3

Chimay – Scourmont Abbey -Donchery 

After the recommended visit of Chimay, known worldwide for its Trappist beer and cheese but also for the 1000 years of history it reflects, you will cross the small French villages of a few hundred inhabitants in a natural setting to reach your accommodation.

Day 4

Donchery- Orval- Chassepierre

The cycle track will take you from Donchery to Sedan along the Meuse. You will continue your journey to the Abbey of Orval. Founded in 1132, Notre-Dame d’Orval is one of the most remarkable Cistercian abbeys in Belgium. Discover a historical place, art collections and a famous Trappist beer, in one of the most beautiful regions of Belgium, in Gaume.

You will continue your journey to the lovely little village of Chassepierre, a painter’s paradise and one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia. The village of Chassepierre, cradled by the Semois river, immediately seduces with its idyllic setting and its old rural houses. Stroll through its narrow streets and admire the church, the old banal mill, an old wash house…

Day 5

Chassepierre-Rochefort

Following the Semois river, you will discover the most beautiful landscapes of the Gaume region with the center of Rochefort by the end of the day.

Day 6

Rochefort-Namur

You will start with the Rochefort Abbey, located 3 km from the town center. A little jewel of serenity to discover with respect to the congregation of Trappist brothers who still live there.

You will sail along the Meuse to Profondeville where a boatman will invite you to ride in a private boat* to end your tour in an idyllic way or you can finish your journey along the Meuse to Namur. Enchantment guaranteed.

End of stay after the step

Option: Extra night to enjoy this beautiful city. Overnight stay and breakfast in a hotel or guesthouse.

Accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis (B&B), in double rooms (or single rooms with supplement) in 2**, 3*** and 4*** hotels, bed and breakfasts or gîtes selected for their gastronomic, comfortable and friendly character.

Meals

Overnight stay and breakfast (B&B). For this package, evening and lunch meals and drinks are at your expense. However, you have the possibility to book a picnic at the time of registration with some of the participating accommodations.

Luggage transport

With. Your luggage should not exceed 20 kgs, but we would be very grateful if you could limit the weight.

Carrying

You will carry only your personal belongings for the day; your luggage will be transported by vehicle by us.
